The industry spotlight begins in Wales this week as The Royal Pier in Aberystwyth comes up victorious in the prestigious best bar none award for 2013. The bar saw off competition from the Drayton Arms in South Kensington, the Plug in Sheffield and the Rose in Bedford to take the title. The award seeks to encourage and celebrate responsible management, an important accolade to reward establishments that are helping to improve the perceptions of how bars and nightclubs are run in the country.
JD Wetherspoon intend to open another 8 public houses using a twelve million pound expansion investment, creating 400 new jobs across the country. These eight new properties will be in located in Cardiff, Cramlington, Aldridge, Lowestoft, Leek, Bideford, Bolsover and Honiton.
Customer spending in pubs on debit and credit cards has risen 4% since this time last year, according to a recent study by Barclaycard. A small but encouraging increase for an industry that has suffered considerable setbacks in the last decade. The rise was uneven however among different areas of Britain, in London the percentage fell by 2.1%, while in West Midlands, Yorkshire Humber and North East spending increased with Wales topping the list with an admirable 11.8% rise.
Wondertree is a brand new, casual, all-day dining experience courtesy of Giraffe and TRG. The new food and drink franchise launches in Heathrow’s Terminal 2 and is set to be the largest restaurant ever constructed at the airport (Over 5000 sqft). Opening in June 2014, the restaurant promises a broad menu and relaxing atmosphere to cater to the needs of the thousands of travelers who pass through Heathrow Terminal 2 every year.
And finally the Manchester United legends Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville have combined to conceive a new hospitality company with the intention of expanding into the worldwide hotel market. The venture has been named GG Hospitality, and is the parent company of Café Football and Hotel Football. Four years in the making, the two premiership veterans have assured the media that they are not merely figureheads of GG Hospitality, and instead will be taking a hands on approach in the conception and running of GG Hospitality.
