Nightlife Unscripted, with DJ Aitch B

NDML meets DJ Aitch B

Fresh off a MOBO Award, world renowned DJ and founding member of Soul II Soul, Aitch B talks to NDML as part of our Nightlife Unscripted series. Catching him in Manchester’s Freight Island at the recent NTE Summit, Aitch B was happy to talk us through his year.

We discuss his thoughts on the current nightlife experience, the cultivation of homegrown talent, and the importance of celebrating a range of music genre.

Aitch B discusses his history in the music scene:

“I’ve just driven up from Sheffield after attending the MOBO Awards last night and receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. They’ve given it in recognition of 35 years since the release of Soul II Soul Club Classics album. We made a major impact back in the late eighties, early nineties on UK black RnB music. We helped to kickstart the club scene and what it’s now morphed into and it’s various different guises. When we started, the different genres were almost non-existent. Now House  music has morphed into techno, garage, drum and bass, jungle – and after that it’s grime, drill.”

“It’s not about playing any kind of trend – it’s about playing from the heart.”

Aitch B discusses what he’s come to talk about at the NTE Summit:

“I’ve come to sit on a panel regarding the cultivation of homegrown talent, and what steps can be taken to enhance ethe progress and wellbeing of future talent. It’ll be a conversation about past experiences, how we got into the game, what’s changed, what advice I’d give to up and coming talent – and what’s I’d give to myself 25 years ago. I nice to be honoured, and that what I’ve got to say might mean something to someone.”
